FIRE ISLAND VISION

Titus Kana grew up in Bellport, Long Island in the 50s and 60s. Inspired by Ansel Adams, as well as his grandfather, Herb Austin and father, Milan Kana, both aspiring photographers who promoted the area, he began a photography career in High School, predominately shooting landscapes and seascapes in the area around Bellport and Fire Island. He exhibited his early works at the Sou'wester Bookstore in Bellport and the Westhampton Art show in 1973 and 1974.

After graduating from Rochester Institute of Technology Titus moved to New York City and began his career as a photographer, working for such major clients as Saks Fifth Avenue, AltmanĖs, J. C. Penney, Sony, Woman's Day, Cosmopolitan, Simplicity and Town & Country.

In 1994 he took classes in Photoshop and bought his first Macintosh computer. As the technology grew, his knowledge grew and he now is at the top in all aspects of digital imaging. He has been an expert adviser on AllExperts.com in digital imaging and the business of professional photography.

In 1989 Titus and his wife Jane who at the time was a fashion editor for Cosmopolitan Magazine and their four year old daughter, Betsy, bought a house in Davis Park , Fire Island.

In 2002 Titus exhibited at the Davis Park Art show with his digital landscapes and seascapes and his first digital panorama, a 7x36 print consisting of about 50 images of dune front houses and many people enjoying the warm August ocean. Soon after the first digital cameras capable of infrared photography were introduced to the market Titus began to experiment with taking images and rendering them in Photoshop, thus was born Ile de Feu Infrarouge (Fire Island Infrared). Using a Minolta D7 camera he captures the shot in both the infrared spectrum and the visible spectrum. Then he combines the two in Photoshop to create surreal views of the beauty of Fire Island.

In July he made a trip out through the Moriches Inlet to photograph the dune front houses from the ocean, expanding the concept that he began 2 years earlier producing Ile de Feu Panoramique. The photos can comprise up to 25 shots stitched together to create the panoramas. Although he has limited the size of the panoramas to 14x40s, extreme sizes are well within the capability of this medium.

Adding to his legacy, he has made available historic pictures taken by his grandfather, Herbert Austin and father, Milan Kana, chronicling the earliest days of Davis Park and Fire Island creating Ile de Feu Historique. Herb Austin settled in Patchogue in the early part of the 20th century. His profession was insurance but his passion was photography and he was an enthusiastic proponent of the Patchogue area. He organized the first official airmail delivery in the United States as sanctioned by the U.S. Post Office.

During WWII he produced two Patchogue Family Albums with his photographs of the area to send to the soldiers in the war. He met Milan Kana at the U.S.O. in Patchogue and through their mutual interest in photography, he was introduced to Nancy Austin. Milan and Nancy settled in Bellport and had 3 sons including Titus.

MONTANA PRITCHARD PHOTOGRAPHY

Montana Pritchard specializes in fashion and high-end lifestyle photography. With offices in New York and West Palm Beach, Montana Pritchard strives to create beautiful images with an emotional depth that resonates with both the viewer and the consumer. He has worked on several national campaigns, such as Barcelo Rum and Play Golf America, and his commercial client list includes Nikon, Physique and Nike. Montana’s passion is beauty and fashion photography and he continues to push himself as an artist by working on personal and fine art projects.

Montana traveled to the beautiful Turks and Caicos Islands to work on a project with Ko-Mar Productions for Projectec.

With Hurricane Jeanne (Florida's fourth hurricane this year) headed directly for our studio in West Palm Beach, we decided to make the best of a bad situation and take the opportunity to move the rest of our gear to our New York studio. Montana, Simon and Carey made the drive in less than 24 hours and even had time to stop and take in some sights in Washington DC.

Montana worked with Kelly Burns of Ballet Florida to shoot a dress rehearsal of an upcoming show. These images capture the delicate beauty of the dance.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times... That's one way of describing this weekend. For Montana Pritchard and Shane, it was the best of times, soaking up the sun and drinking freely while their cruise ship meandered the Caribbean to stay out of Hurricane Frances path. For Carey and the rest of the crew left in Florida, it was boarding up houses and suffering through power outages. The good news is that we all survived and made the best of it with several hurricane parties at Carey's house - the only one with power.

This weekend was the best month of our lives! Seven of us piled into an RV and headed down to Key West, Florida. Not much can be said about it because of our rule 'What happens on the RV, stays on the RV' however we do have some priceless photos that have been edited for public view.

To celebrate our tenth year in business we hosted 'Decade', an exhibition and party. For the exhibition, Montana created 'Sans', a body of work which presents fashion stripped of all its production, is a realization of Montana's desire to escape the confl icts and confi nes of commercial fashion imagery by creating a series of images which solely emphasize the relationship between the model and photographer. The opening and party were very well attended and lasted into early the next day.

The DayNightLife launch party held by publisher Jim Nicholas at Tsunami was a huge success. The premier issue of the magazine geared towards the young professional in Palm Beach county has generated a buzz within the community and people are already looking forward to future issues.

To show the capabilities of their digital cameras, Nikon asked Montana create a beauty shot and gave him complete creative control. The image they chose can be seen under the Clients header.

Montana Pritchard and Paul spent a week upgrading the Williamsburg studio into a beautiful live, work and shooting space.

After a year of sharing a small living space in the city, we upgraded to our own studio in Williamsburg with plenty of shooting space.
